The Repression of the Centered Self
Liberation from repression is a utopian goal for that that recognize that repression represents the principal means by which society controls the individual.
And, the repressive conditions of the institutions of industrial society rob the individual of control over one’s actions and movements, forcing us to physically work in order to survive. In addition, the laborer is continually subjected to the repressive hierarchies of the class and social structure.
Should it be surprising then, that prisons resemble factories, schools, barracks, hospitals, which all resemble prisons? The hierarchies of power demand that space be organized so that people’s movement and actions can be both monitored and controlled.
