Inspired by a field trip last January to the Florida Atlantic University Galleries to see the exhibit, “DIRT: Yuta Suelo Udongo Tè,” curated by artist Onajide Shabaka, students from Boynton Beach Community High School and Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach created their response to the show – different ways that cultures interpret dirt – physically, spiritually and symbolically.
Titled “Soiled Again,” 15 students from Gwen Seuling’s art class at Boynton High and 15 students from Carly Gates’ English class at Dreyfoos created a multi-disciplinary response of art and poetry.
“This is an experience that can’t be replicated in the classroom,” Gates said in a statement. “To be able to go beyond the assignment to share what you’ve created with the community is incredible. Our students feel like real artists and writers.”
